Congregations throughout the Diocese of Southern Ohio observed Appalachian Sunday on February 18. This observance, authorized by the 2005 diocesan convention, draws attention to the reality that a large part of Southern Ohio's geography is in the Appalachian region. At least two million people in Southern Ohio have Appalachian roots. The Episcopal Appalachian Ministries Committee, chaired by the Rev. Katharin Foster, prepared bulletin inserts and liturgical resources to help mark the occasion.
The bulletin inserts present Appalachia in all its complexity: rural and urban, rich and poor, flourishing communities and those badly in need of help with economic community development. The inserts also highlight the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of the Appalachian people. Practical examples of how Episcopal congregations are responding to Appalachian community needs are also featured in the Appalachian Sunday resources.
